Searching for the “Fix”

Searching for the “Fix”

November 6, 2019

As I am starting this blog, I am on a new path in my journey on health and wellness. This time, it has been better than it ever has been in my life. Now, I say “this time” because in the time that I began my journey (in health, wellness, and fitness), I have probably tried every kind of diet or nutrition regimen that you could think of (I will share more in different blog posts that are to come).

When I was 16, I was going into my junior year of high school, and I knew that this was going to be my first year on the Varsity basketball team. My coach had approached me the year before and told me, “We want you in the best shape you can be in, so that we don’t have to take you off of the floor”. Well to a new team member on the varsity for the coming year, I definitely took on the challenge. But over that summer, and getting into my first relationship ever (yes, EVER), I was in worse shape than I had ever been in my life. My whole life I was unaware of what eating healthy was, and I would have not touched a salad with a 30 foot pole (literally). My basketball habits year-round kept me in decent basketball shape, but in no way was I healthy. When August of that year came around, and school started back up quickly, my basketball skills and abilities had slowed down even quicker.

Me, the summer of 2015

From that October of that year, until the January of the next year (so all of basketball season, yes its the longest season in my eyes), I lost 50 pounds. Yes, 50 pounds. If you would have seen me before the weight loss, you would have thought that I had some decent muscle mass on me and that I would be strong at a smaller weight (I was just strong because I had a lot of mass, go figure). HA! When I got down to 155 (the smallest I have ever been in my adult life), you would not have recognized me. I had no muscle, only what had been built from small basketball workouts and what I had built from running a million down and backs for 2 hours after school each day in practice. I was tiny.

Me, February of 2016, -50 pounds!

I was not ready for this kind of reaction from my body as a response to the terrible eating I had done the summer before. With wanting to have as much play time as a junior on the varsity, I knew that this was NOT going to cut it for me. The October of my junior year in 2015, I decided to make a major lifestyle change. I went from eating probably everything under the sun, to eating literally only clean vegetables and lean protein (at very proportioned sizes). Before making this major change, I had no idea what a calorie was, I had no idea of the impact that sugar, gluten and dairy had on your body and its ability to function (I still did not gain knowledge on a lot of these things until recently this year). I had no idea what it looked like to be healthy, have clear skin, sleep good, have a great mental clarity, and so much more.

I honestly didn’t even recognize myself!

A lot of people I had gone to school with my whole life didn’t even recognize me around the halls. There were many double takes happening every time we changed classes, and it was all so strange to me. I went from being the bigger, third wheel, and funny friend…to the hot, quiet girl on the basketball team that no one could even recognize anymore! This kind of attention was something that I did not know how to handle at the time. I can just see my sweet self now, back then. Totally confused why all eyes were on me now, ALL THE TIME. Man I love that girl. Totally naive to the things that she would influence others to do and totally unaware of the waves that she would make in her life.

This is a picture of me at the spring pep rally that same year, my mom showed me this picture and I literally asked her, “Who is that blonde girl?”. I wasn’t even kidding y’all. I had no idea how much I had transformed!!

When I lost the weight, I honestly had no idea what I was still doing at that point in regards to calorie awareness or anything like that. All I was majorly focused on was staying away from major carbs, sugar, dairy, gluten and anything that in my mind “would make me fat again”. Looking back, that is not a great relationship with food. I firmly believe that I was scared to be the third wheel again, and I never wanted to eat or even think about anything that would make that happen again.

I give y’all this brief story about my health journey at the beginning, to be vulnerable and show y’all how my perspectives on food, health, fitness and wellness have changed over the past four years. I just wanted y’all (yes I say y’all way too much, I am a Texan, y’all should say it too), in short to understand where my perspectives towards being healthy first began. I created this blog because I want to share the things that I have personally learned and grown through in the past four years that have been life changing and eye opening (in regards to health and wellness).

This is me now, at 20 years old! Still on the journey of being healthy and learning as much as I can!

In my blog, I will be writing about what small changes one can make to their diet that can improve your skin, mental clarity, anxiety, stomach issues, bloatedness, weight gain, etc. I will also be sharing on how to make healthy choices when away from home, out on dates or even on vacation! Being healthy is a lifestyle, not a diet. When we live the lifestyle, we implement it into everything that we do. Another large topic I will be covering is GUT HEALTH. Many people do not understand the importance of gut health and what can happen to your body if your gut is not in good shape. I am excited to share on these topics and share simple lifestyle changes that can improve your life forever!

Since it is the fourth anniversary of me saving my own life (in my opinion), I am loving reminiscing on these past four years of my health journey. One of the biggest things I love about health and wellness, is that there is no end game. Of course you can function at your best, eat your best, and do everything right. But there is always more to learn and always space to grow in every area of your health. I truly believe that our journey in health, fitness and wellness, is a continued journey throughout our lives. Imagine only being 4 years in, I cannot wait to see what I learn in 10, 20 and 30 years in. I am further looking forward to sharing more of my story with these other topics and how they correlate.

Thank y’all!!

This is the first post on my new blog. I’m just getting this new blog going, so stay tuned for more. Subscribe below to get notified when I post new updates.

Why isn’t anything working for me?

Hey y’all, Hayden here!

If you have read my first blog, called “Searching for the Fix” you read about how I have tried just about any and every nutrition regimen or diet you could think of…and none truly worked for me! At least not until I tried Arbonne.

When I started using Arbonne’s nutrition products, I was totally unaware of what was in the things I was eating and using daily. I also came to learn that the U.S. FDA only bans about 11 things that aren’t allowed in our food and other products. WHAT?? That is crazy when you think about all the types of chemicals, dyes and deadly things that are allowed into our foods today. The UK bans about 1100 things that aren’t allowed in their food and other products. Okay now that sounds better…right? Well here comes Arbonne, and they ban 2200 things that aren’t allowed in their products. Now that’s outstanding!

When you actually take a look at what is in the ingredients of the candy bar you’re eating, the drive-thru food you just purchased, the skin care that you’re putting on, the sugary cereal you’re eating, etc. You’ll find some scary things in your food and skin products that you are actually ingesting! Many people do not even know this or care enough to even look up the ingredients that they can’t even pronounce. If everyone looked up what was actually in the things that they’re eating, they would change their diets in an instant. Consuming products that do not have harsh chemicals, dyes or hormones is more beneficial to our health than people realize.

Arbonne is Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, Kosher, Vegan and the list goes on. Arbonne is everything free that you could probably think of. The large majority of people that use Arbonne’s products have huge success with turning their health around and getting their lives back because these products are so clean and detox everything bad!

The program I mentioned in my first blog that finally worked for me, is this one. Arbonne’s 30 Days to Healthy Living really was a life changer and game changer. I mentioned my daily routine and what all I do in my past blog called, “Let’s get to it!”. This program is about resetting your body and letting it function to the best of its ability!

A lot of people truly don’t know that they need to detox, and in my opinion everyone could! No matter fitness level, age or health, everyone could use this program!

Signs of needing to detox are:

  • Bloat
  • Exhaustion
  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Hard time falling asleep
  • Restless sleep
  • Skin issues
  • Acne
  • Female issues
  • Joint pain
  • Stomach issues

This is just the beginning of the list, it could probably go on for a while. The point is, that anyone could benefit from a detox!

When I started my 30 Days to Healthy Living, I knew I needed a detox. I drank a Diet Dr. Pepper probably every single day, ate dairy and other things I shouldn’t. But in my head it was pretty “clean” compared to the way other people ate. I still knew that my body was hurting from the inflammatory things I was still eating! I know the diet drinks and dairy were the most detrimental to me. When I cut those out, my skin got tremendously better and my bloat went away all together. I used to bloat for no reason it seemed like, when I drank water, ate, worked out, everything! So between cutting out the inflammatory things of my diet and supplementing myself with Arbonne’s clean and beneficial products, my body was so happy with me! I was finally giving it the proper nutrition and not feeding it things that were making me feel sick and tired all of the time.

Here is an example on the things that this program focuses on:

So what comes in the 30 day kit? Here’s what you get in it:

You get:

  • 2 bags of vegan protein
  • 2 boxes of energy fizz sticks
  • 2 boxes of herbal detox tea
  • 1 box of digestion plus
  • 1 box of body cleanse
  • 1 tub of greens balance
  • 1 bag of fiber boost

This program totally reversed all of the signs and symptoms of needing to detox, and it helps your health get to the next level. Really this program works!

All of this to say to y’all, if you’re looking for something and you’ve come to the end of your rope, this could really help you! I was definitely at the end of my search and didn’t want to look any further and the Arbonne found me (literally haha, a story for another time).

This program helped me detox and not only lose weight, but also gain more mental clarity, not have anxiety, no depression, self doubt, none of that! This isn’t about just losing weight, it’s about gaining your health back overall!

Here are my results from my first 30 days, WOW! I totally surprised myself. I love this program and live by it.

If you’ve read this and it resonates with you and you’re needing help, please get in contact with me. I’d love to help you figure out what we can do and help you start your health journey!!

Stay tuned for more posts, super thankful for everyone’s support. Thank you for reading!

Let’s get to it!

I hope everyone had a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving! I know I had a great time getting to have two Thanksgivings with my own family and my sweet boyfriend’s family.

So, on this week’s blog, I’d love to share about getting into a routine with your nutrition and how to make it sustainable. Many people are hesitant to start on their health journey because they think that it’s going to be too hard, too time consuming, or too confusing! And this is far from the truth. I’m going to share with y’all my routine through Arbonne’s 30 days to healthy living. This is a program that Arbonne has, but it’s so easy and healthy that you can live on it. I could live on this routine for the rest of my life, honestly!

First thing in the morning, I’ll get up and have my Digestion Plus packet and an Herbal Detox Tea.

The Digestion Plus is a prebiotic and probiotic. This supplement helps build up your gut flora. This supplement is called the “Muffin top Melter”, and it truly is. This helps eliminate bloating and helps burn unnecessary stomach fat. The Herbal Detox Tea is an herbal tea that helps detox your liver and kidneys. This further takes away toxins that are hindering your body from functioning the best it could! So in short, these are what I do at first every morning. Here is what they look like:

The next thing I do is make my morning protein shake! On most days I workout in the mornings, so I usually wait to have my shake until I get done working out. With having quick and busy mornings, the way that Arbonne has made this program makes it so simple and easy to have breakfast and other snacks on the go!

I usually put 4 things into my morning shakes. Protein powder, Fiber Boost, Greens Balance and unsweetened almond milk! There are many ways that you can do these shakes, and I think that’s why I love them. I used to hate protein shakes because of weird aftertaste and strange textures. But Arbonne’s vegan protein is so smooth and amazing! There’s no additives or preservatives, artificial flavors or colors or anything. It’s very clean and great for your body. The Fiber Boost powder is your daily amount of fiber that your body needs. It’s a flavorless powder and many people don’t eat enough fiber in their diets. This powder is great in your shakes. The Greens Balance powder is your daily amount of fruits and vegetables, with over 37 different fruits and veggies. I would have never considered a greens powder before trying Arbonne’s because I would have thought it would be gross. But this one is so naturally sweet and tastes great by itself or in shakes also! Here is what these products look like:

My next and maybe most favorite product out of my Arbonne routine, is Fizz Sticks. These are packets of natural B12 energy with a blend of botanicals, green tea, guarana and ginseng. These are a coffee and caffeinated drink replacement, and this has totally helped me kick coffee! Coffee is very acidic and can cause some major health issues that many people don’t realize. Fizz sticks also improve cognitive performance, endurance, and reduce fatigue. These are usually my mid afternoon pick-me up. Since getting rid of coffee and starting on Fizz sticks, I have had more energy in my whole life. I have stopped wanting to take naps and actually taking naps overall! This is a huge deal for me. I am also a big work out fanatic, and my workouts have been so much better since this also. Getting off of harsh pre-workouts and only being on Fizz sticks, has helped my performance in the gym tremendously. I can NOT rave enough about these. Here is what they look like:

Here is an example of what my day looks like in my usual routine:

This only seems a lot because of the wordiness, but it’s so simple and systematic. I truly am a “creature of habit”, as my mom would say. In all honesty I could do this routine everyday for the rest of my life! It’s so simple and easy to follow. It’s also easily accessible from anywhere and Arbonne has made all of their products to where you can easily take them on the go for vacation, travel, lunch away from home, etc!

Finally, what’s for dinner…and do you really do 2 shakes a day? So for dinner, we’re going to have a clean meal focused on whole foods that are beneficial to your body. Yes, I do 2 shakes a day. Arbonne’s protein is very filling and keeps you satisfied until you’re ready to eat again about 4 hours later! One of my favorite dishes to make is brown rice and quinoa noodles with butter! Sounds strange, but really so yummy. Growing up we didn’t really eat “bread” at all. Meaning anything that had gluten in it! So pasta, sandwiches, breads, etc, weren’t in our diet! Being able to have this kind of pasta is amazing for me, simple to make and so yummy. Here are some more of my favorite dinners to make that are easy, healthy and Arbonne approved!

These quinoa noodles are also great with marinara sauce!

Spaghetti squash is also a staple for me! Super easy to make and also so yummy.

Gluten free avocado toast, sweet potato fries, a hamburger patty, and a fried egg!

I just wanted to show y’all multiple options for what is possible and allowed to eat on Arbonne’s 30 days to Healthy Living! And not only Arbonne approved, but healthy and whole foods in general.

I hope this helped y’all in seeing that eating healthy is truly easy and is not confusing at all. Utilize these tips and tricks throughout the holiday season and even after!

Stay tuned for more blogs, thank y’all for reading!⚡️

Put it in Neutral

Y’all know the drill, Hayden here!!

With the holidays coming up, there’s so many things to be excited about! One being all of the yummy food that is coming! Secondly, getting to spend time with your friends and family. Lastly, that just because you eat all the foods on one day for a family gathering, doesn’t mean that you are going to lose all of your progress that you have previously made.

When you enjoy yourself for Thanksgiving, you simply are just putting your body in neutral. You’re actually not reversing your progress in your health and fitness at all!

I recently found this picture on Instagram, but I believe it is so true! A couple meals out of a lot will not hurt you.

Many people believe that because you have a family party, holiday dinner or work party, that you can’t eat yummy food’s because it is going to ruin your diet! In reality, it is not going to hurt you (of course, if you don’t over eat and make yourself sick by all means).

I specifically used to be one of these people! When I first started getting into eating healthy, I didn’t want to attend any functions or anything that wasn’t going to have food I could eat. This means church events, birthday parties, holiday parties, family functions, and more. I missed out on a lot of time with the people I loved, because I thought that eating a few things I usually don’t, would be detrimental to me.

I now completely realize that this is not the case! A couple days out of the whole year, I am allowed to enjoy myself while spending time with the ones I love! And this especially used to be true for me and date nights. I used to only want to go to certain places because I knew I could eat there, but that got boring for my boyfriend and I. When I had decided that a meal here and there would not hurt me, and we got to go eat at more places that were way better than what we were previously doing.

Another thing that people believe, is that they can’t start being healthy until the holidays are over! Meaning January 1st. Many people also don’t realize that you can still be healthy through the holidays, have a few yummy treats, and get back on track the next day. Really, now is the time to start your health journey if you have been considering it! Being healthy is a lifetime journey, and the best way to live is an 80/20 lifestyle. This meaning that you eat healthy and clean 80% of the time, and yummy not so healthy things 20% of the time.

This 80/20 lifestyle helps you truly enjoy your life without feeling deprived whatsoever! This means no missing out on family functions, “Friendsgivings”, Christmas parties, birthday parties, and more! In my opinion, this is the best approach to being healthy and making it sustainable for anyone.

With all this being said, start your health journey now! The holidays are not going to stop you from your progress moving forward, and as I mentioned earlier, it just puts you in neutral. Enjoy the holidays and your families, love y’all!

Better Safe than Sorry

Hey y’all, Hayden again!

After explaining my background in my health journey last week, I wanted to further go into depth on how I was able to manage eating healthy while being busy. When I first learned these things, I was still in the middle of basketball season, going to school, on long bus trips and weekend trips for playoffs, and even more. I also had come to terms with myself that I was not going to compromise my health again just because I was very busy.

I learned how to “meal prep” as you may have seen it called on social media. With being in high school, and our head coach being in charge of the meals we got to eat on the road, it was always either Raising Canes, Pizza Hut, or Jason’s Deli. And at this point, I had learned enough about all of those types of foods, that I did not want to touch those things with a 10 foot pole. After eating Raising Cane’s every week or even sometimes twice a week with travelling to Lubbock for district games back then, it got pretty old. Even before I got healthy, I had to stop eating it when we went there because of how it made me feel after eating it! You’d think that a head coach of a program would care about the nutrition that he was feeding his athletes (Ha, think again)!

As I previously mentioned in my last blog, I had no clue about calorie awareness, or what a calorie even was (even after losing all the weight). So I started using the app, “My Fitness Pal” to help me keep track of all of the foods I was eating and how many of each macro nutrient I was eating also. If you are new into a health journey and are not aware of how many calories a lot of things are, this would help you fairly quickly and get you familiar with calories and how much the everyday things you are eating are! It is definitely eye opening for sure!

This is what the app looks like!

While using My Fitness Pal, I began preparing my meals for road trips in advance. If I knew that we were going to be on the road until midnight, I would pack a meal that I could eat cold on the bus, usually a salad with a clean protein source. And I would also pack another small snack. I always joke and remember, but when our coach would tell us that we were going to Raising Cane’s, my team mates would argue over who would get my bread, extra sauce and fries. I learned how to meal prep in high school, and I feel like this was valuable for the rest of my life! I would take my meals with us everywhere (literally). Into the Raising Cane’s, Pizza Huts and Jason’s Delis. I got some light harassment from those around me that completely did not understand health at all, but I am better for it in the long run. The discipline I learned in the last two years of high school and basketball trips, was worth way more to me than a Box Combo from Raising Cane’s.

In my everyday routine now, most of the time I do not have to meal prep, but on the days that I do, I know how to do it quickly and efficiently!

In my opinion and experience, here are some tips for success in meal prepping!

  • Have a plan for what you are wanting to make and take with you! This could be from snacks for your work day, school day, road trips, lunches, etc! For example, if there are days I know I won’t be able to come home for lunch, I pack a serving of my Arbonne protein in a zip-lock bag, and place the bag in my shaker cup! This makes for easy transport and storage for wherever I am going to make my shake. Now all I need is water.
How I transport my protein when I need it for lunch when I am going to be busy! So simple and quick!
  • Think about the availability of what you are going to have time to eat, make, and sit down with! This means that if for example, you’re going to be on the road for 6 hours, it may not be very reasonable to pack a large bowl of your favorite soup that needs to be microwaved and managed well in the car! That would not work out so well. Possibly consider packing some protein bars (my Arbonne one’s below for an example), or a healthy wrap, sandwich or even fruit to snack on while you drive! Now, if you are just taking your lunch or snacks to work where you have the availability to prepare anything, then take whatever you want! You aren’t very limited there.
Arbonne protein snack bars!
  • Have the proper containers on hand for the type of food you are prepping! Sometimes trying to figure out how to transport certain things can get a little tricky. For example, taking a protein shake? Use a shaker cup and your protein in a bag like I showed above. Taking grilled chicken and quinoa? Go and get some seal-able glass containers (they sell these everywhere) and fill ‘er up! Wanting to make a cup of hot tea later in the day, but not sure that you’ll hold onto the tea bag long enough to not lose it? Choose your favorite cup with a lid, and simply put the tea bag on the inside (without water of course). This makes for easy transport and is the same concept as the shaker one!
How I transport my tea for when I want it later in the day!
  • Be intentional about sticking to your plan and making time to prepare! A myth about meal prepping that a lot of people believe, is that it takes hours to do! This is totally untrue. After you spend maybe an hour a week preparing the bigger stuff, but in the day to day, it takes less than five minutes! Most of the time only one minute! When you are intentional and make the time to prepare, you’ll be glad you did! You would rather be “Safe than Sorry” in instances that you might not know what kind of food will be available! I have had to learn this the hard way! I would go into events or even trips sometimes thinking that surely there would be something I could eat! Too many times I had proved myself wrong. So take the time and prepare, you will be happy you did! Your health and future self will thank you also!
Some examples of glass containers to use for your meal prep! I personally have some similar to this!

Thank you so much for reading on how to prepare and tips for success when starting to prep your meals and snacks! I am really enjoying this blog and I am excited to share with y’all more on other things!

Stay tuned!
